Sustainable clothing is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. A lot of the time people don’t even realize they are contributing to the sustainability movement just by purchasing secondhand on websites like Poshmark, Depop, and ThredUP. Giving a second life to thrifted clothing is means less wasted textiles and fabrics rotting in landfill and negatively impacting the environment. With fair fashion on the rise, there have been a few notable celebrities paving the way and leading by example. Here are some celebs that you might not have known following the fair fashion movement:

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Launched a GOOP clothing line called the G. label. It is described as clothing for those striving to live a more natural, sustainable lifestyle. Gwyneth described the G. Label as a capsule line that is designed to be trend-proof, full of staple pieces that can be worn and layered season after season. Gwyneth also ensured that both design and production of the garments were ethical: everything is produced in Italy using high quality fabrics such as linen.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson has become well known for her activism in the realm of sustainable fashion. She is always seen dressed head to toe in sustainable clothing on the red carpet. Recently, she has joined the board of the luxury company Kering, which owns high-end brands such as Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Alexander McQueen. Emma is part of their sustainability committee. 


Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde collaborated with ThredUP in 2019 with the goal of getting more consumers to do their part to end fabric waste. They took 4,000 used tees, denim, jackets and more from ThredUp’s inventory, and redesign them with cute and colourful new graphics. The collection was inclusive to all sizes ranging from XS to 3X and included a maternity line as well. A portion of the profits made from the line went to the Circular Fashion Fund in support of sustainable designers and fashion models. 


Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, has embraced slow fashion by wearing a diverse range of sustainable designers, repeating her outfits, During her time in the White House she brought in fashion designers as part of her education initiative. She has expressed the importance of celebrating local talent and in underlining the importance of making educated shopping decisions.

Will.i.am

Will.i.am has been active in the sustainability movement and has used his influence for positive change by partnering with Coca-Cola to create EkoCycle. The mission of EkoCycle is to educate and promote the importance of recycling and reusing, particularly aiming to gain the attention of the younger generation. EkoCycle has turned plastic bottles and popcans into high-quality products in collaboration with Beats Headphones, Levi’s Jeans, Suit companies, and even NBA Uniforms.
